Rest day in Junction City

Junction City was founded in 1857 but the first buildings did not appear until 1858 and the town was formally incorporated in Febuary 1859 by a special act of the Kansas legislature. The name derives from its situation at the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers.
Being a rest day we decided to rest.I washed and oiled the bikes,Elizabeth washed all the clothes. We are incidentally staying in a Courtyard Marriot. Our accomodation throughout the trip has been in a mixture of Holiday Inn Express,Marriot and Comfort Suites and Best Western. They are all very similar. We have either two double king size beds or one enormous bed.usually a refrigerator and a microwave.Strangely we have had a bath in all but one, where we had a very smart shower.Breakfast is juice, porridge, cereals, yoghurt, cakes, bland bread and scrambled egg, sometimes omlettes, and either bacon sausage or patties.Like a thin beefburger made,I think,of sausage meat.Often there is biscuit, which we would call a savoury scone and sausage gravy. We tend to avoid the latter. But we are well fed.Dinner is mainly chicken or beef in a variety of forms, but there has often been a choice of prawns and or salmon.Vegetables, other than broccoli have been somewhat lacking but salad is widely available. So again we eat well in the evenings.Went with Peyton and Tom(logistics)to a Mexican last night and we chaps ordered the combo, which came on two full plates!!
Anyway back to today, having washed bikes I sauntered over to Walmart for some toothpaste and a sandwich for our lunch. Then we had a gentle walk around the streets to find a restaurant for tonight-chinese for a change-ate our lunch and gossiped with the maid who was very proud to tell us about her youngest son who is a sprinter and has a college track scolarship,a very proud mum.
This afternoon I had a little bit of surgical work to do with a fellow cyclist, people still trust me! Then loaded up the GPS routes for the next 7 days, during which my GPS unit went into failure mode and refuses to power up.Will have to sort it somehow, but Elizabeth's unit is our back up and is loaded up.
Went out for a very good chinese meal,a little while after our return Elizabeth realised she had lost her jumper.Walked back over our route and found it -great celebration.
And so to bed to prepare for the morrow.

  1. Howard, check your GPS device's charger cable. I had a similar problem. Amazon was able to deliver a replacement with two day delivery to the day after tomorrow's hotel. I hope that works for you. In 2009 and 2017 we stayed in Abilene, so I'm not sure you will take the same route into Topeka. If you do, I hope you stop in Dover for pie. RSRO (ride safely, ride often), Jim
