Cottonwood via the Haunted Hamburger

We had a late start today,07.30,because it was only 5°C at 07.00.Very stiff wind last evening, that had fortunately died away to leave a clear blue sky.Enormous plate of pasta for dinner last night that E nor I could finish, but the beer was good.
Tom,the logistics manager, read this blog last night and complained that there was little about him,so to put the record straight Tom is a large personality, who sorts out all the baggage, the meals, and constantly encourages,he even went so far as to explain to the restaurant where we were going to eat how to make a shandy, before we got there. He is an ideal man for the job, very likeable and knows to talk about the' root'(route) and not the 'rought'.
Where was I,left at 07.30 to ride along a busy Pioneer Parkway, hard shoulder littered with gravel and other assorted debris, none of it any good for bike tyres, but we did not puncture.Left the Parkway to begin a long climb, about 6 miles,up to the summit of Mingus mountain. An attractive climb through forest which got us all up to temperature. At the refreshment stop at the summit there was a motorbiker  with a trailer. In the trailer was a large black dog who wore a pair of goggles for his ride,I was too slow to get his photo.
A long descent down the mountain was made a trifle problematic by the poor road surface and increasing wind, but there were some spectacular rock formations-see below. We all stopped in the small town of Jerome at the Haunted Hamburger for a spectacular milkshake and an early lunch.
Straight after restarting we hit a traffic jam, road closed by a car accident.Sounded like the driver had a heart attack and became unconscious, the passenger steered the car into the embankment where it stopped and flipped over.He was given CPR she only had bruises.Did not have to wait long before we could proceed down the hill and into an unpleasant head wind, which stayed against us for the last 5 miles to the hotel.
A short day ,only 44 miles but we climbed 2830 feet and descended 4851 feet,so that will tell you a lot about tomorrow's ride!
Total so far 494.3 miles.
