First let me report that the canal like photo I posted yesterday is the Colorado River aqueduct-Thanks Jim who sent me an email to tell me.The Aqueduct delivers in excess of 1 billion gallons of water per day to the Los Angeles area.I photographed a tiny length as it stretches 242 miles, with 90 miles of tunnels,5 pumping stations and almost 30 miles of siphons. An amazing feat of engineering but before this trip totally unknown to me.An advantage of travel.
To todays ride-We left Wickenburg in Arizona at 07.00,but had apparently changed time zones with no change in the time, because Arizona does not use daylight saving time,so moved to the same time as California when the California clocks sprung forward. Such little anomalies do make life interesting.Anyway we cycled in a small peloton for about 10 miles before starting the climb to the Yarnell pass.A 5.5 mile gentle climb producing magnificent views, the summit was at 4864 feet.Refreshment stop just over the top, followed by a beautiful descent, without trying I clocked 71.3 Kmph. The temperature was a lovely 25°,and the wind rather gusty and slowly increasing in speed as the day wore on.The descent was followed by a slightly trying flattish few miles that generally were flat up and slowed by the wind. After 43 miles we stopped at the Country Corner store for an ice cream and a drink-very welcome,as the stop was followed by another gentle climb to the outskirts of Prescott.Very much a case of an ascent followed by a pleasant descent followed by another ascent but finishing with another fast descent to Prescott. The area about is well forested, such a contrast to the desert of two days ago.
We arrived in time for a proper lunch-chinese-and plenty of time to do the washing!
Photos show the approach to the Yarnell pass,a very long train going along the mountain side,Bill and Linda on the flatish section and the lovely rock formations near our refreshment stop.Remember that www.justgiving.com/fundraising/howard-reece-smith1 is still open for gifts!!!
